My employer wants to fire me during my breast cancer treatment. I got a lawyer working on it, but I need emotional support. My employment position is public and will hit the front page of the newspaper.

Glad u have a lawyer. Going public might not be so bad...especially b/c u can help many other women that r going thru similar situations and r not in the public eye. Sometimes we have to wonder y we r going thru this and God has this all set up for a purpose. I'll bpraying for u, dont know who u r; but God does.

Let the paper report it! Let the lawyer deal with it! You concentrate on healing and loving your family!

Very glad you have a lawyer. Under no circumstances -- federal or state law -- can you be terminated because of a disability. Period. The newspapers eat this stuff up. Go for it.

Oh, that old thing.........;-) Turns out I broke some scar tissue when I was working out. The darn thing slid to the side a bit. No surgery, thank heavens. Thanks again for asking!

They can't fire you unless you can't return when your FMLA is up. I know all too well. Let it be in the paper - it'll show how horrible they are. Prayers to you

I suppose I should have tempered my response with some qualification because the law can be interpreted in any number of ways. Setting aside for the moment the issue of interpretation and additional mitigating factors, however, the law is very, very clear. You cannot terminate an employee on the basis of a disability.

Andre, if that happened to you I'm so sorry. Adding a huge insult to injury.

Yes Evelyn, it sure did. Said they had to fill my full time position if I couldn't return. then they offered me part time - 2 maybe 3 days a week, knowing I couldn't return. Kicked while I was down.

Over the past 3 years, I received excellent performance evaluations and got a $50K salary increase over the same period for my work. Now that I have breast cancer they want to fire me. I am in SHOCK! I have heard it happen to so many breast cancer survivors. I have used all my FMLA leave, but as you know breast cancer treatment doesn't stop at 12 weeks. I have been working part-time, but not good enough for them.

Again, I'm very glad you have a lawyer working on your behalf. Let her/him take the driver's seat and you concentrate on your treatment and recovery.

Sending good vibes and gods blessings your way . Please try to stay strong and continue to focus on your main goal, healing. You do what you need to do to get better and have faith in your lawyer to do what he does best. It is too bad they are so insensitive. Going public will be a challenge, but will be necessary for them to realize the level of wrong they are doing. As others have mentioned try to focus that you will be paving the road for others that might encounter such bullies. Best wishes for you. "Fight like a girl" kiddo!

I lost my job after 15 years, working in a hospital! I didn't have enough sick or FMLA time so they let me go! They said I could come back if a position was open, but I work in a small dept. and am at the top of the pay scale. No one will hire me with 30 years experience and being at the top of the pay scale when they can hire new grads for a lot less. You go girl!!!

Well you want support and I can guarantee you have it here. I'm so sorry that you have to go through this while dealing with BC but if I were you, I wouldn't wait for the papers to come to me.... I'd go to them. The more public the better - of course this hinges on YOUR comfort level with all of this but I predict the outcry of such behavior will shock and amaze you for the better. I don't think this practice is unusual and I'd even bet that your employer will try to say your termination is for other reasons as it's illegal to sack one based on illness. Keep your chin up dear one. We are all here for you so vent if you want. Pound on the keyboard. We will listen. Sending hugs, love and strength to you.
