My mom is going through her chemotherapy still but she won't eat. She says she's not hungry. Is this related to the chemotherapy? She's down to 82lbs. Is there something we can do?

My biggest hurdle with chemotherapy was eating. Over the course of 6 cycles, I lost 30 lbs. I had no appetite and most food tasted horrible, even water. When I found something I could eat I stocked up on it because I knew I had to force down anything i could to stay healthy. For me, that was creamed based soup such as chowders, bisques, and squash/pumpkin soup. Crackers and toast at times also tasted ok. Normally I am a coffee/chocolate lover. Both these made me sick. I found, especially as chemotherapy progressed, it became more difficult to eat. I could not prepare food or be around when my family was eating as the smell of it upset my stomach. If your mom can find just anything that she can "stomach" then that will help her. Just understand it is common and allow your mom time to experiment with foods that she get down.

Eating was very hard for me too! Ironically due to the steroids I was given each week, I gained 30 lbs during the 6 months of chemo. I found that I was ok with liquids, so did those fortified drinks, like ensure, to get protein. Alas, I ended up with anemia and was hospitalized for it--- should have taken more iron, but even that might not have helped the anemia my onc said. Ask if smells bother her too. Certain smells were awful and strong to me after chemo. Smell is so related to taste and eating. Also, chemo jade me so tired, that eating was WORK. So, if you can time it when rested, it is eadier thn after a dr visit or shower or some other form of "work" Good luck!

I had talked to my momma about possibly getting the protein milkshakes, she had tried ensure but she said that she couldnt drink it. She has lupus as well, I think the combining things are effecting her. She was a healthy 120lb woman and after she had her breast removed a yr ago shes been losing weight and cannot keep the weight on at all. She just told me that she's 90lbs and has been that for a little while now. When she does eat it's about the size of a egg. Then she just doesn't want to eat anymore and she will only eat once a day. Twice if we are really lucky. It's almost to the point of suggesting to her significant other ways of "tricking" her so he will at least get some kind of food in her. I know it's wrong to trick her as if your tricking a toddler to eat their veggies but she is a walking skeleton. Does chemo therapy become easier on the body over time?

I think there is a ensure-like drink that is good for lupus patients too ( especially if they are on dialysis). Any dialysis clinic knows what this is... That way whatever she is eating doesn't end up aggravating lupus

Chemo is a tough thing to go through. My husband went through it. I made him several milk shakes and gave him what seemed to be appealing to him. Ensure is packed with calories and protein. Her appetite is pour now because of the impact Chemo has on her. Also give her B - 12 which helps boost her appetite. I wish you both well. God be with her

Between the nausea and just feeling like crap in general, I didn't feel like eating, especially doing the worst days/weeks of each treatment. I found that eating baked chicken helped my nausea more then meds did. They didn't have some of the meds that are out now that are suppose to work alot better then the ones I had. If she can tolerate milk products, get her some, Endure. That will help her get the vitamins that she's missing from not eating. I gained 30 pounds, not from eating but from the Decadron (steroid). When she feels like eating, whatever tastes good, that's what she needs to eat. I found that rainbow sherbert also calmed the "road kill" taste in my mouth from chemo and was soothing. Chemo will kick your butt, but it can also kick cancer's butt to the curb!. Discuss with her doctor what other suggestions he/she has. Best wishes to your sweet mom and these is a light at the end of the tunnel. I was diagnosed Valentine's Day 2002 at 43 years young and Stage III with more then 1/2 my lymph nodes positive. My prognosis wasn't good, but almost 10 years later, I'm doing great. Looking back now, some things are fading as far as memories, and the nervousness about going for my annual check ups with my oncologist don't even start until the day before, or the day of. It does get better, but it's one hell of an emotional roller coaster ride that is for sure!

Load drinks with calories to help...milkshakes or if she normally drinks a low fat milk, have her switch to higher fat so she doesn't lost too much weight . Sometimes I couldn't eat, but liquids were great. I craved milk, but don't normally. Try to get her bland foods. My go to snack on the days I was most sick were Stoned wheat thins with a little cream cheese. I didn't eat much else on those days. Vanilla yogurt was also good---I preferred Greek
