The surgeon is probably a physician your doctor has worked with in the past. I had an actual breast surgeon do my surgery but I was being treated at a breast cancer center. If you are not comfortable with this referral, I would ask my doctor to refer you to a breast surgeon. Is the doctor giving you the referral your ob/gyn or family physician?
Once I got the news I had cancer, my internist turned my care over to an oncologist. The oncologist then made the referral to the breast surgeon. I also interviewed her asking about background and experience. The entire experience of having a mastectomy was (this is going to sound very weird) nearly --pleasant-- yes, pleasant. I also interviewed and got several names of anethesiologists. I think part of the reason it turned out so well was my mental status.... I was absolutely happy and satisfied I had made correct choices with "my girl team." They were young, enthusiastic, and had the latest, greatest, information and training.
