I am going to have a mastectomy soon. Is immediate reconstruction surgery good or should I wait?

It greatly depends on your stage of cancer and/or radiation needed afterwards. Most women with early stages of cancer can have immediate reconstruction but some choose to wait. I had my mastectomy a little over two weeks ago. I have a late stage cancer and my surgeon said I was unfortunately a candidate for immediate reconstruction therefore I had to wait. I'll have to have more chemo then radiation before I get the go ahead. I have heard of very good results with women that have to wait or choose to wait. And several like Carla that are happy as well. Good luck with whatever choice you make!

Hi Diana I have notice that you have taken time to respond to many questions asked by others on this site. I also am very impressed with your responses. However, I would like to tell you to stay encouraged as you too are still going through your own personal journey and treatments. God makes no mistakes and he is already using you to make a difference to women across the world that have been diagnosed with this disease. My prayers and thoughts are with you as you continue with your treatments. The good thing about all of this is that this too shall pass and is only temporary . Again thanks for touching my heart and please know that my prayers and thoughts are with you.

Hi Lysa. :). I'm doing good despite having a little set back yesterday. My mastectomy was a little over 2 weeks ago and had a follow up visit with my Onc. She told me I'd need to have more chemo. I had too many positive lymph nodes. :(. I had 8 rounds of chemo before surgery. Now I need 8 more of a different drug combo. I start Monday. I was just getting my hair back! Lol. That's ok. It's just a bump in the road. :). How are you Lysa?

Hi Zandra! What a sweet thing to say! Your post was very thoughtful and touching. Yes, it's been quite a road. I've found early on in this that it's been very theraputic to me when I feel that I've helped someone. When I was first diagnoised I read all I could about this disease. I'm far from knowing all the answers but if I can help someone by relating what I've gone through then it makes me feel good and gives me some purpose while I'm here. Then maybe that person can do the same for someone else. We're in a club that no one wants to belong to. I believe there's some good that can come of everything bad that happens. I see that you're a survivor! That's awesome!! That gives me hope. God bless you my Sister of Hope,

Thanks Diana. I celebrated 5 years cancer free on 8/23/11. No family history and was diagnosed with Triple Negative stage 2 when I was 52 years old. I had a Lumpmectmoy 16 rounds of chemotherapy and 25 radiation treatments. The worst experience ever in my life:(

However I was determined to make a difference and take this horrible experience and make it into something positive by helping others that have been diagnosed and those who have not. Although I am still employed full time I am very committed to bringing awareness and early detection about breast cancer to so many. I am a breast cancer buddy to over 25 women. Another 39 year old mother of a 13 year old son was just added to my list on Sunday. I'm going to continue doing everything in my power to help others that have been diagnosed and praying that one day they will find a cure for this disease. I have an appointment with my oncologist on tomorrow so continue to keep me in your prayers

I had my mastectomy 3 weeks ago with immediate reconstruction. I am so happy that I had this process. I have had 2 fills now and have a small mound growing where my breast used to be. This has helped me mentally with the loss. When I look in the mirror I feel okay.

I had a bilateral mast and immediate reconstruction and I agree with both ladies if I had needed rads I would have waited but only chemo for me! B4 cancer I was a D cup and now with the expanders I'm an A for now but I still feel like a woman and if I had to wait idk how I would have felt about my appearance

The question is are you having radation because reconstruction will get in the way and for how hard it is to kill cancer I wouldnt do it until after radation
