Unfortunately, this site hasn't updated itself enough to include "previvor" in the list of relations to breast cancer. I am positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation, which drastically increases the risk of getting breast cancer, as well as ovarian cancer. I found a lump in late 2009 that turned out to be nothing, but I wasn't going to wait for it to happen (with an 85%-90% chance), so I pursued preventative surgery. I had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy & breast reconstruction. I had my mastectomy in February of 2010 & my exchange surgery in June of 2010. I opted to also include nipple reconstruction & am almost completely done! I am more than willing to share details & photos with anyone who is interested.

I am a survivor, of sorts. I am a previvor. A proud previvor. I have faced my risk of cancer, used information as knowledge, & saved my own life.

Other than my own story, my aunt faced breast cancer three times (& sadly lost her third battle), my sister was diagnosed at 27, my cousin at 24, my best friend's sister at 26 (who, sadly, didn't make it to 30), & now my best friend at 26 (diagnosed an hour after her sister passed). Had she been tested for the BRCA gene mutation when her sister was diagnosed, she would have had the option to be a previvor today. She didn't test, however, so she will be a survivor after we get though all this chemo, surgery, & radiation. She will be a warrior, like all the other survivors I know. :)
